MSP Testing
MSP testing will be going on for our 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders during the next 3 weeks. It is very important that students arrive at school ON TIME as late students may not be able to be admitted to testing sessions. Please do not schedule appointments during this time because once a student begins a test, he or she must finish on the same day. Here is a link to the testing schedule.
Online Library Resources
With the science fair approaching and many of the classrooms conducting research projects, many students are asking to access library resources from home. North Beach has access to district resources as well as resources such as PebbleGo and eBooks that are provided by the school. Information for all resources, including login and password information, can be found on Mrs. McLane's page. For district resources, follow these steps:

Excused and Unexcused Vacations
The Seattle School District firmly believes that students must be in school in order to learn. This year SPS is focusing on improving attendance district wide. The district has issued school staff some clarification about what is and is not an excused absence.
Educational trips may be excused while family vacations for the most part will not be excused. To help clarify the difference between excused and unexcused family trips:
- Going to another city, country or out of state, to visit family or friends, is not excused.
- If the trip is to be considered educational, there has to be a plan in place for what the student will learn, what educational activities are to be accomplished, and how the student will report on his/her learning when he/she comes back. The plan could include language immersion (although this wouldn’t be excused by itself), visits to historic or cultural sites, taking photographs and creating a report based on all of this that the student makes to the class or turns in to the teacher, or some other planned educational activity that the teacher and principal approve. The plan also should include how missed work will be made up—not that school assignments would necessarily be taken along.
- A trip for a wedding or other family event is not automatically excused. Neither is a trip for the holidays that gets extended because of the distance traveled.
- At least five days of a trip for a funeral can be excused, but any part that would be added beyond this simply for a desire to visit family for a longer period of time may not be excused.
So what does it all mean? According to the Washington State’s Compulsory Attendance Law, schools are required to take steps to address attendance problems and file a truancy petition if a student has 7 truant days in a calendar month or 10 truant days during the school year.
You may click here for the district's truancy brochure (that was included in your back to school packet,) or pick up another copy in the office if needed. Additional information is available on the district’s attendance web page.
Since we realize this is a change from current practice and that plans have been made for upcoming breaks, we will allow some leeway as these tighter guidelines are implemented. Our Planned Absence Form and (new!) Educational Trip Plan are both available on the Forms and Information Page or in the school office.
