    Partnership Tools and Supports

    The confluence of class-size reduction, increasing enrollment, and bell-time shifts is giving SPS the opportunity to work closely with partners to build an expanded learning system that truly meets the needs of our students and families – together, we can reimagine how we use out of school time hours and how those hours can best support the needs of our community.

    The SPS School and Community Partnership Department and partners have developed tools to support coordination of expanded learning services, including licensed childcare, tutoring, and enrichment. The tools were developed collaboratively with principals, curriculum & instruction staff, youth service providers and partners, and the City.

    Expanded Learning Tools:
    1. Introduction – process recommendations on how to effectively use the tools
    2. SPS Expanded Learning Inventory Work Sheet– to support identification of strengths and gaps in your current partner programming, who is being served, and when
    3.  Space Use Document– to support coordination of facility use based on licensing and service constraints
    4. Letter from facilities (issued in March 2017) that outlines the board approved priorities for school space use
    5. Coordination and Funding Models– to support alignment of partnership services to school goals and increased coordination of services
    6. Youth Development Executives of King County has developed a toolkit of resources on launching, growing, and improving school community partnerships. This toolkit includes a number of practical tools that will help strengthen your partnership. 
    7. To help you in identifying additional partners the SCP Department has created a searchable database of school and community based partners
    8. And finally, School's Out Washington's Quality Standards for Afterschool and Youth Development Programs may be useful as you support or build out an expanded learning system
    9. PTSAs often play a vital role in coordinating enrichment programming at school sites. We have developed tools to help PTSAs ensure that they are meeting legal requirements and setting up strong partnership systems. 
    We recognize that many schools and parents already have strong systems of coordination and may not need these tools; we also recognize that it will take a number of years to develop coordinated expanded learning programs at all schools and that the need for afterschool services goes beyond what SPS can provide. These tools are intended to jump start this important work, and we will continue to build supports.
