    Inquiries About 2018-19 School Assignment

    If you have a question regarding your student's 2018-19 school assignment, please contact the SPS Service Center to begin an inquiry. Inquiries are designed to correct any errors or omissions that may have occurred during the open enrollment process. Inquiries have priority consideration over newly submitted choice applications, transfer appeals, or waitlist moves

    Transfer appeals for the 2018-19 school year are considered beginning June 1, 2018. Any appeals received before that date were held as a courtesy until June 1, 2018. 

    The transfer appeal process is subject to the Seattle Public Schools assignment guidelines and is considered only in extreme or unique circumstances.

    Prior to submitting a transfer appeal request, please contact the SPS Service center to determine if the transfer appeal process is the best course for addressing your concerns.

    Parent/Guardian Instructions For Transfer Appeals (Spanish)

    It is recommended that you review the Brief Guide for Disputes and Appeals to determine whether or not the transfer appeal process will address your concerns. Submitting a request incorrectly may delay the processing of your request.

    Transfer appeals are considered only in extreme or unique circumstances.  Appeals are subject to the SPS assignment guidelines are not granted on the basis of:

    • Curriculum issues
    • Transportation issues
    • Personal Preference
    • Perceived quality of a school
    • Desired cultural population
    • Child Care
    • After school activities
    • Non-school appointments
    • Family members' health

    Speak to the principal of your student's school prior to submitting an appeal. The appeals board will not consider appeals until the principal has had an opportunity to resolve the concerns.

    Fill out a Transfer Appeal Request Form. Forms are also available in person at the SPS Service Center. Follow the instructions on the form.

    Write an appeal statement. Use the three questions on the form to help you explain your case. Attach the required written statement and any applicable documentation to your completed form. Please note that a contact name and number do not qualify as documentation. For example, a police report may be documentation, but a police report number would not. It is recommended that you keep a copy of what you submit.
